Introduction
In contemporary times, we have seen that the world is rapidly transitioning towards cyberspace. This has been deeply enabled by emerging technology and easy accessibility to the internet. Online gaming has been evolving since its inception way back in the 1970s in the form of Atari, and today we see games being created in AR/VR environments such as Metaverse. Online gaming has various advantages for gamers as well as the industry, and today, the global gaming industry has reached a value of over $196 billion, and the Indian Online Gaming market has reached a value of $2.8 billion and is expected to reach $5 billion by 2027.
E-Sports in 2023
2022 has seen a massive surge in e-sports tournaments and players worldwide. The transition has been substantiated by forced lockdown during the pandemic and the sudden transition towards cyberspace. Most popular esports tournaments in 2022 by Peak Viewers:

The above-mentioned graphic shows the most famous tournaments across the world. These numbers clearly show the staggering evidence of the rapid boom of e-sports globally. Commonwealth Games and Olympics committees have recognised e-sports as part of the competitions, and a separate category for e-sports has been created in most of the global competitions. These include games such as DOTA 2, League of Legends, Free Fire, etc. It is pertinent to note that India has been participating in e-sports tournaments very actively and won’t the Bronze Medal in the Commonwealth E-sports, India’s first all-women contingent has gone to Sri Lanka to compete in the Global Championship for Counterstrike Global offensive, such indigenous e-sports athletes have been breaking various barriers and taboo in India and are paving the way for the future e-athletes in India.
The keen aspects of Online gaming and e-sports have been taken up by the Ministry of Sports Affairs, and the E-sports federation of India has been set up to cater for the needs and welfare of the e-sports players and to promote the keen aspects of the sports such as training, certifications, organising Indian Tournaments and such.
